WorkbookWorkbooks are usually filled with practice problems, where the answers can be written directly in the book. Workbooks are often used in schools for younger students, either in middle school or elementary school. They are favored because students can work directly in their books, eliminating the need for copying questions from a textbook. Workbooks can be viewed as customized interactive manuals which are used to help provide structure to an otherwise complex problem. The workbook module offers an environment for creating (professor) and completing workbooks (students). ProfessorThe professor has to activate the Workbook module, through the lesson's administration function, by clicking on it and ensuring it has changed from a shadow to a bold option. Clicking on the module button in the professor's control panel, the professor will see a web page like the one below (the page is the result of two "Add item" actions, as explained below):
One of the main professor's actions is the "Add item" option in the main menu. Through this action, the professor can add a new lesson-related item, which will be visible to his students. These items, can either be tips for the students or self-assessment questions or a combination of both. Each item has a title, a text which is a short description of the item where the professor can add images/videos from the lesson's file manager. Also, in each item the professor can add a question from the lesson's question bank. If the professor desires this item to be non-optional, then he should check the "Grade answer" option. This means that, when the student answers this question, the given answer will be taken into account in order to increase his progress in the current Workbook. Professors can reuse an already registered item in another lesson, in the current Workbook. This can be done by clicking the "Reuse item" link and provide the unique ID of the reused item. This ID can be found in the right-upper corner of each item's dotted rectangle. Important note: Assume that a professor is teaching two lessons, lesson A and B. Also, assume that questions from lesson A are reused in lesson B. If the professor delete lesson A, then the Workbook of lesson B will be reset, an action that will have the same implications as the normal reset process of lesson B (details of the reset process will be explained below). For each registered item, the professor is able to permanently delete it, edit its title/text/question and change its position in the Workbook, through the "Move" option. Through the "Switch to" option, the professor can be easily redirected to the Workbook of another lesson, that is taught by him. Through the "Check progress" option, the professor is able to examine the progress of his students in the current Workbook. Also, the professor has the ability to preview each student answers. Through the Settings icon, in the right-upper corner of the page, the professor is able to change the Workbook name (in the example above this name equals to Maya civilization), and allow or disallow the export and print options which are visible to his students. Once the professor has added all the desired items, he should publish the Workbook, through the corresponding option, in order to be visible to his students. Note that, the publication process prevents the professor from adding new items in the current Workbook. From now on, the items cannot be deleted and each item's question cannot be edited. Nevertheless, if the professor wishes to add new items or edit item's question, he should reset the Workbook, make the desired changes and publish it again. The reset process has as implication, the permanent deletion of the students' answers in the previously published version.
StudentA sample Workbook page for a student who is observing the Workbook presented in the previous image is shown below:
If an item has a question, then the student is able to answer it and check his answers by clicking the corresponding button. If the question is non-optional, then a right answer will increase the progress of the student in the current Workbook (left-upper corner of the page). When all of the non-optional questions have been answered correctly, the Workbook is marked as completed and the student is able to reset it and start the process from the beginning. Note that, the reset option will delete the previous answers. Through the "Switch to" option, the student can be easily redirected to the Workbook of another lesson (a lesson which is attended by the student). The student is able to print the current Workbook and download it in pdf/doc format. Files2
