CrosswordTable of contentsCrossword puzzles are a fun and interactive way to test your knowledge of a particular subject. The goal is to fill in the squares with letters, forming words or phrases, by solving clues which lead to the answers. Creating crosswordsProfessors can create crosswords to assist their students in self assessing their knowledge of particular topics and in building up the required knowledge in order to successfully complete the end of lesson test. Once the crossword module is enabled by the professor within the particular lesson, crosswords will automatically be generated on all the "empty spaces" questions that the professor has created within the lesson. Shown below is an example of "empty spaces" questions.
The professor can then individually select which "empty spaces" questions are included in the pool of questions from which the puzzle is generated from.
Note: Crosswords will only be generated for the "empty spaces" questions that are assigned to units within the lesson assuming they are based on theory. For more information on creating "empty spaces" questions, please refer to the "tests" section of the wiki. Professor must then “activate” the crossword as well as setting options, on a crossword by crossword basis, to define whether Students can “reveal” an answer as well as defining the maximum number of questions to be included in the crossword.
Note: To ensure reliability of the crossword generator the maximum number of questions can be no greater than 30. Keep in mind that the number of questions in the actual crossword may be lower than the number set here as a result of the process of interlinking the words on the puzzle. Using crosswordsStudents can use crosswords as a means of testing their knowledge on certain topics, created by professors who can ensure the level of difficulty is at the same level as with the level expected on the end of lesson test. Using the "empty spaces" questions shown above, the following crosswords were generated, as viewed by the student of the lesson:
Shown below is an example of the student's view of one of these crosswords. This crossword was generated dynamically for the student and is randomly made up from the pool of questions defined by the professor:
Student fills in the words directly within the puzzle, making use of mouse and arrow keys to move around or spacebar to clear a letter. If the Professor allows, the Student can "Reveal" an answer to have it automatically filled in. Once the student has begun filling in the puzzle question he can check his answer. The status message will display the results as well as updating a progress score as to the % of completeness of the puzzle.
Note: Revealed answers do not count towards progress score, only those manually entered by the Student.
Note: Crosswords are not an assessment medium and although students are informed of percentage compelte and time, this is for their own knowledge and is not part of any assessment score. Files7
